Do you know your audience? Have you got any traffic?
This is without a doubt the single most important foundation that you need to establish before you even look at building a website. If you do not have a predefined audience and know exactly what they are looking for, pretty much all your efforts will be a total waste of time.
You need to figure out what people are looking for on the internet and not take for granted that there is a crowd or group looking for your stuff.
How to find traffic! No trafic no point!
Here is a quick tutorial to set you off in the right direction. This clip will help you to establish what people are asking Google and naturally if you know what people are asking then you can figure out how to provide an answer. This does not establish your niche at all but it will set you in the right direction.

Meet your market
I can’t stress this enough “Your target market is the key to your online success!”
Do you know them?
- Have you taken the time to go online and see if they are there?
- How old are they? Are they men, women, kids?
- What do they expect when they come to a company like yours?
- How smart are they and what specific talents or skills do they have?
- Where do they live? What are those places like?
Are they Web savvy or are they just beginning to use it? In either case, what are their concerns about doing business on the Web – what scares them off?
Now that you have answered these questions, you are now able to write your Killer Sales copy (for more on this click here) You can now with sensitivity to your visitors needs, hand them all your information, explaining why you are qualified to do what you do and why you are better than your competitors.
Remember! The most successful websites on the internet are built entirely for the people that visit them.
Flash - no no!
Did you know? That a new visitor to your website, takes a couple of seconds to make up his mind on whether to stay or to leave. That is a very short time! Now imagine that this visitor lands up on your homepage and is faced with a blank screen with a grey bar in the middle that says:

This is naturally what happens if you primarily use Flash technology to build your website, or if you have a Flash landing page - in other words, the first contact that your potential customer has with your website is Flash. Flash movies, while being slick and sassy and with a definite 'wow' factor, can potentially be deadly if your visitor is primarily looking for information and has to make a split second decision on whether to stay on your site or move away to a competitor.
The other problem is that search engines cannot interpret Flash movies! This is vitally important, since the way that someone will find YOUR site in the search engines is if the search engine can read your website pages. Google needs to be able to read ALL the words on ALL the pages in your website in order to be able to serve them up when someone searches for information, and if your whole site is built in flash technology, this becomes virtually impossible.
Budget
Define yourself here because if you don't you could quite easily find yourself overspending or not getting what you need. Websites range from virtually free to millions. But be careful! There is a line of you pay for what you get and the free stuff in my opinion isn't that great. Not only all the stability issues with free hosts but I don't think that there is any evidence of the free stuff getting to first page on Google
If you build your website the right way from the start is should without a doubt be the most cost effective way to sell your product. Not only that but it can reach considerably more people than your whole sales force combined.
